From Classroom to Conference Room: A Real Interview Experience
Last week, one of our students (Nikhil, a former customer support lead) got shortlisted for a BA role at FinSureTech, a digital transformation company for insurance and banking clients.
He had prepared well — but what surprised him was the depth of questions around business process modeling.
“They didn’t just want a BA… they wanted someone who could model, analyze, and even improve business processes!” – Nikhil
Here’s a breakdown of the real questions he faced, and how he tackled them using techniques from our course.
Business Process Modeling Interview Q&A
❓ Interview Question | Suggested Answer (With Practical Angle) |
---|---|
1. Can you explain what a Business Process is? | “A Business Process is a structured set of activities or tasks that produce a specific outcome — like onboarding a customer, processing a claim, or fulfilling an order.” |
2. Have you created any As-Is and To-Be process models? What tools did you use? | “Yes. I used BPMN via tools like Bizagi and Lucidchart. I modeled current (As-Is) processes to identify bottlenecks, then proposed optimized (To-Be) versions with fewer handoffs and automation recommendations.” |
3. What’s the difference between BPMN and Flowcharts? | “Flowcharts are basic visual flows, whereas BPMN is a standard notation that supports different elements like Events, Gateways, Swimlanes, and Message Flows. BPMN is more precise and used in real-world BA projects.” |
4. How do you identify pain points in a process? | “Through stakeholder interviews, shadowing, and observing delays, rework loops, or customer complaints. I use techniques like SIPOC and Value Stream Mapping to spot inefficiencies.” |
5. Have you ever recommended a process improvement that was implemented? | “Yes, in one case, I mapped a ticket escalation process and suggested automation for Level-1 queries. This reduced average resolution time by 40%.” |
Where Do Most BAs Struggle?
They know what a process is, but they can’t:
Visualize it clearly
Use standard modeling techniques (like BPMN)
Spot waste or rework in processes
Present improvements confidently to stakeholders
That’s why most interviews fall flat right after “Can you show me a process model you created?”
