A Real Story from the Interview Trenches
Last month, one of our students (let’s call her Megha) attended an interview for a Junior Business Analyst role at InnovaTech Solutions, a fast-growing IT services firm known for its structured approach and Agile delivery model.
Megha shared the actual questions she was asked, and more importantly, the approach she used (which we practice in class!) to crack them confidently.
This post is for all those aspiring BAs who ask me —
“Swapnil, what do interviewers REALLY ask?”
Let’s get to it
Q&A: Real Interview Questions with Sample Responses
❓ Interview Question | What You Should Say |
---|---|
1. How do you approach requirement gathering when you’re new to the domain? | “First, I identify all key stakeholders—business users, SMEs, tech team. Then I conduct interviews and workshops to understand pain points and goals. I complement that with reviewing existing documentation and system walkthroughs. Tools like Context Diagrams help frame the big picture.” |
2. What’s the difference between Functional and Non-Functional Requirements? | “Functional requirements are about what the system should do—like processing payments or generating reports. Non-functional ones are about how the system performs—like speed, security, usability, and availability.” |
3. Tell us about a time you had to deal with conflicting stakeholder requirements. | “In a previous project, the sales team wanted a quick-to-launch feature, while the compliance team flagged data privacy concerns. I facilitated a requirements prioritization workshop using the MoSCoW technique and got both sides to agree on a phased approach.” |
4. What is a Use Case? How is it different from a User Story? | “Use Cases are more structured—they describe interactions between actors and the system in detail. They include preconditions, basic flow, and alternate paths. User Stories are simpler and Agile-friendly—‘As a user, I want… so that…’. We use them for incremental delivery.” |
5. How do you ensure the solution aligns with business objectives? | “I always trace every requirement back to the business need. Whether I use a Business Case, a Problem Statement, or a KPI model, my goal is to validate that every solution component drives a measurable business benefit.” |
Key Takeaways for Aspiring BAs
These aren’t textbook questions — they’re real, practical, and context-based. Interviewers today want to know not just what you know, but how you apply it.
Here’s the truth:
Most candidates fail not because they lack knowledge, but because they can’t communicate their thinking process confidently.
That’s exactly what we focus on in our Business Analysis Foundation Course.
